Not newsworthy, I can understand that.

er, the point is that these are the types of maps that aren't even releasable. Even back in '98, the law of the land was you shouldn't release a map unless you'd made something id quality or higher. It's 2004 now, let's not be showing off subpar maps, and esspecially not when you've yet to make anything better.
I made this news becuase you constantly come off as an arrogant twat, and constantly pretend like you've got sooooo much creative skillz and whatever that you can't even contain them within Quake. Prehaps if you took the time showing us how awesomely skilled you are rather than telling us, we'd care you made shitty maps in 2002.

Ok, I downloaded the maps, and I'd have to say I don't think Q1 justifies your capabilities honestly.

In reply to jsHcK:
I'd say "out of line" is the fairest analysis of what you wrong :P.
The deal is, it's about quality. Whether you've made one map or one hundred maps, if you're releasing good quality maps you'll get respect and interest for that, if you're releasing bollox you'll get criticism (hopefully useful) and incentive to improve.
It's not about being a noob or not. Take Kinn for example - who the fuck is Kinn?? Some random noob no-one knows shit about. He appears with a first released map that's pure quality, and gets due acclaim for it. Of course, you don't have to release something THAT great, you just either release something that's good quality or at least show determination to learn and improve.
As for Phait, well, he's been around long enough and hopefully got enough feedback and advice that he should know what he's doing. But if he just wants to mess around with this stuff, he's not going to get much appreciation.
In short, Phait - go map.
OMG Bitch.

once I clear up some other priorities, I still enjoy mapping... I could probably pick at another DM every so often.

I just like the game.

I was going to point out that I just posted my lesser map releases to General Thread, but actually I kind of think all maps should be news, just so someone looking for maps later can find them all in news posts. Of course if you later post higher quality stuff to news, then that's a pointer to everything else anyway.
"you shouldn't release a map unless you'd made something id quality or higher"
My only problem with this statement is it implies a comparison must be possible, no apples vs. oranges. In other words, if you fail on almost everything got right, but also have good things not in their maps this is a difficult comparison. One might then be shy about their maps just to avoid this difficulty, and be justified because those with id on the brain will just have a knee-jerk reaction anyway.
I prefer to make up my own mind as to whether to play a map anyway, if that's even reasonably possible just make them available and use truth in advertising.
BTW

"id quality or higher" is the acid test, and really just means 'doesn't leak, something of a defined theme, brushwork / gameplay / lighting all show some work was put into it'. Until you've built and learnt enough to do at least that, releasing maps is silly and any comments gathered on the maps are common design sense anyway.
You look at these maps, it appears as though they'd been slapped together, mere box maps. Generic comments apply, "use more detail, define your theme better, source lighting". This isn't a case of someone making something so differant that it can't be compared, it's someone making something that's just crap.
And since this is a level design board, not a players forum, the expectation for quality is raised above 'is it fun?'. We expect at least some work done and for there to be something worthwhile about the maps. Your decision to play the maps doesn't mean even truthful advertisment of them to such an audience is a hot idea.
Anyway, the bigger issue is that releasing older maps is great when you have some body of work out already and people really like your stuff. It can be interesting to see where your favorite mapper's roots are. But Phait doesn't have anything more besides a single map and cocky holier than thou attitude.

"Phait doesn't have anything more besides a single map and cocky holier than thou attitude."
I really would like to know where you get this idea from. I can only recall saying honestly yet humbly that I know I have potential but was always hindered by my weakness in layout design. I've never stated or felt I was better than anyone. There's alot of nice work done here to aspire to.

You can't copyright something that is in the public domain. You had your chance and you blew it, Shambler.

'doesn't leak, something of a defined theme, brushwork / gameplay / lighting all show some work was put into it'
Wow, I think I actually did that.
As this possibly the site most coherently supporting Quake SP, actually "fun to play" is at least worth a mention here for Quake maps but I can see anything for another game should be a bit better or at least more interesting.
I haven't looked at Phait's maps actually, but then if it was up to me there's only been maybe 3 DM maps in the history of man worthy of a news item.
