Just finished it.
Damn, that was a good game! Movement/controls were a bit iffy at times, the ragdoll would shit itself occasionally, and there were model seams/cracks from time to time, but those minor gripes were far outweighed by the good stuff.
I played it all weekend, and really enjoyed it. Good story, good gameplay, nice mo-cap and voice talent (and gratuitous one-liners), and very elegent implementation of stuff (e.g. stealth, health, weapons) that is often done poorly. I quite liked the level design too. I don't know that I've played that enjoyable a mix of fps, stealth, and rpg since Deus Ex, and that's damn high praise from me.
I do believe I'll turn right around and play through it again with the commentary.
I'd Like To Try Riddick

But the idea of Vin Diesel in my computer is putting me off.
Guess I'll try the demo, if there's a demo.

is soo fucking great - finally got it to run on my pc ( took 3h of my life ).
the moster spawning in places is really shitty tho - i already encountered 3 or 4 places where monsters would respawn every few secs and always at the same place.. pretty much destroys the atmosphere :/
i want more research + chemical store rooms in games!
btw ss2: rebirth is quite nice, someone redid some of the models for ss2...

Checkout the readme.wri file. There is a subheading called Monster Spawning. Here is a partial cut and paste but you'll want to read that whole section:
Monster Spawning
Not all ecologies support these new unsupported variables. A few will still respawn at their default rates. For instance, there are two ecologies on MedSci1, and only one of them is affected by these variables.
If you've killed everything in a given area, and you wait around long enough, you'll notice that more monsters are spawned to keep you busy. To minimize respawning, use the configuration variable:
no_spawn
Yeah, Already Seen That

Some of you will have played the Flash version of this. I'm currently horribly addicted to the Nintendo DS version. It has a Tetris-like quality to it... crack in game-cart form.

is that related to the old arcade game of the same name?
Nevermind...
#214 posted by metlslime on 2005/03/31 10:41:17
It's just a bejeweled clone with different graphics.
The old arcade game had some of the most hardcore air control ever, by the way. Here's a flyer with some screenshots:

1943 (P38 plane combat against Japan Air Forces) was IMHO one of the best arcade games I ever played (before discovering Doom and Quake...) I know some guys who found an emulator in order to play the game on Linux, and it's still really funny...

Lumines

Forgive me if I stop being coherant midway through writing this, it'll likely be that Lumines has yet again eaten my soul and left me a cold, hollow man with an addiction to it's pretty lights and sounds.
Lumines is a Playstation Portable puzzle game which is somewhere near a cross of Tetris and Tetris Attack, with some of the cool audio/visual effects of Res thrown in.
Play is rather basic, you have rotatable falling squares of 4 blocks that can be 2 colors. The goal is to score points by dropping the blocks to make single color squares of 4 blocks. A 'scanline' passes by the playfield left to right constantly, and removes all the singlecolor squares you've made. Points are awarded depending on how many squares you clear in one pass. There are also 'special' blocks, which are one of the two colors and have a jewel in them. When you make a square with a special block in it, all connected blocks of the same color are also cleared, which generally will clear large areas and make big combos for you next pass of the scanline. Just like Tetris, the game is over when the play area is too full to drop a block.
The Audio and Visual effects are what makes the game so awesomely cool. Every 5-10 levels has it's own animated background and ambient song. Beats and lyrics to the song are played when rotating, dropping, and clearing blocks. There are also some special visual effects depending the the background. All and all making the game look and sound very fun to play.
Only bad thing I can say about the game is that when you play the game through, the order of the backgrounds is always the same, and the first one has a song with a very repetitive 'shinin' and shinin' and shinin' and shinin'...' lyric to it. But it's otherwise very cool.
Anyone with a PSP is going to want this game. Definately one of the best Puzzle games I've played in some time.
Band Of Brothers On A Road To Hill 30 With Maybe Some Omaha Beach And

Yeah BROTHERS IN ARMS : ROAD TO HILL 30 Mini/crap review!!!!! LOLOLOLOLOL aw gibbie lol!.
Yeah so its an fps that defies pretty much everything an fps tries to be. But also remains pretty fun after the fact. Lemme explain u fucking retards!!!
Ok, so. In prety much all fps games if u aim at the enemy and shoot then u score a hit!!! BUT NOT IN BROTHERS IN ARMS LOLOLOOL!!! Actually if they are behind cover u get a nicen circle that fills with colour that shows that the enemy is suppressed which means that u are owning them so u can move and fire while they are shitting their pants!!!
This is generally how u win the game, suppress the enemy then outflank them with your secondary squad and pwn them hard. It sounds wwird but if u can get used to shooting at the enemy without any real consequences other than getting them to take cover then it actually becomes quite fun after a while. Especially when u gain a 2nd squad or a tank!
Graphics are good enough and AI is good too, your dudes take cover and shoot at shit, and generally do what u want, with NOT VERY occasional glitches (tank in breakfast room etc!) its all good son!
It can get frustating at times, (shooting at germans and not scoring a hit even tho your crosshair was on them OMGLOLBBQ!!! but if worth a try imo.
It is very strategic at times too, u can give orders to your squad(s) to tell them to kick arse or SHAG EACH OTHER BY A WALL LOL CZG! etc which is nice'.
I am on level 7 and rock balls! K mini review / shit hole bright to you by DaZ!!!!!! YES I ROCK!!! see u in chav magazine with Kinn etc
OH YEAH

kotor2. so far so good, although parts of it are a bit more frustrating than the original, which i loved playing through immensely.
that matrix online game looks/seems pretty cool, from what i've read. may have to give that a go after kotor2. and maybe finish splinter cell. speaking of which, anyone tried sc: chaos theory?

Hang in there DaZ, we will send these blasphemous Daemons back into the abyss from whence they crawled.

I played up to level 5 (I think) before getting bored. It turns out that 'genuine military tactics like they done used in the war' consists of approaching every combat situation in exactly the same way, making for very repetitive gameplay.
The graphics I thought were way below par for a current PC game. Lots of nastily washed-out textures on some of the levels as well. The character models in particular are going to look a bit sucky to you if you've played HL2 on high quality settings. Sir Daz is dead right about the shitty invisible walls "I am a well trained fit and healthy soldier yet I cannot climb over a tiny pile of twigs which is blocking this gateway OH NOES."
The first-person squad control interface is also incredibly intrusive - it looks like some kind of half-assed Flash game has been superimposed on top of World War 2. Surely this could have been designed to blend in with the rest of the game's artwork more appropriately?
So I traded it in to buy the new Timesplitters.
So What's Pushplay Playing?
#223 posted by pushplay on 2005/04/02 22:41:19
metl: that game has some pretty neat mechanics. Glad you pointed that out.
JP: you're talking about xmame I assume. If you google romnation you can download (if you legally own the game, heh) the roms for the rest of the 1940 series. Also look into Strikers 194*. If you ask I can always recommend more.
Meanhile a friend lent me Resident Evil 4 and I've been playing that. I tried RE2 (I think) a long time ago and I didn't really care for it. I started RE4 with low-expectations and when I started getting frustrated with the first chainsaw dude I almost have up. I got through it though and now I'm 20 hours in and can't put the damn thing down.
I'm also still playing poker. I'm up a bunch online and just won $100 at the casino today.
God Of War

I picked this up and expected it to be another Devil May Cry rip off... and it is, but it's a lot of fun.
The design is top quality. Everything, characters, levels, story and voice acting, attacks, everything in this game is top quality. TOP of the top. Like Kilamanjaro top. Or is it Everest? I forget, one of those is top of the top, just like the quality of this game.
Levels wind back on themselves, opening new areas and what not as you progress. I expected sort of linear levels that moved only forward, but the layout of each level is truly spectacular. I'm on level 4 right now, and I am very surprised by the design so far. Very spectacular.
For example, in level 3 you're scaling down the side of a mountain village around Athens, and wayyyyy in the distance is this huge Ares being attacked by a huge army, with all sorts of missiles flying around, and Ares is just shooting fireballs and picking people up and eating them. That's all background stuff, but occasionally you get a scripted sequence fireball that comes and destroys a building in your way or something. And as you scale down the mountain, dawn peaks and the lighting subtly changes, from early morning blues to pinks to reds to oranges to yellow at dawn... very very nice.
I must say, the game has kept my interest a lot more than Katamari Damacy, which is pretty good too, but God of War is just amazing so far. If you have a PS2 I would recommend it. 5 thumbs up.
Oh Yeah
