But of course Sock. And we're missing out with Than not mapping, his maps pretty much inspired me to get into Quake mapping. 
 
I miss Kell and his really cool take on the quake mythos.

Mexx, damaul, elek, iikka keranen (if only because he'd do some different stuff, not fucking idbase maps).

Although having said that, to make a good map these days means making a map that would wipe the ass of anything back in 97/98. Maps are much better now than they were back then, so some of those classic maps might be made by guys who wouldn't be able to make a good map by todays standards. They might not have the patience. Neil Manke might have been popular back in the day, but could he create awesome maps by todays standards?
