It Would Suck . . .

for specific people.
The only ppl i can see not liking it would be the ZTN's of the world that dont want anyone doing anything with their work, even if it's positive.
other than that, i would think that GNU would apply.

I've recently done this with my maps. They're all available from the maps page on my site, licensed under the GPL. I suspect they will be more useful for the curious mapper rather than for derivative works, but the option is there.

I currently have 2 maps released under the LVL GPL License.
http://lvl.sourceforge.net/lvl-ogsl.php
I mostly don't care what people do with them, short of selling them.

I thought that OGSL wasn't nearly as militant as the GPL?

Given that anybody will do pretty much whatever they want with anything you put on the web, probably without crediting you, regardless of whatever conditions you attempt to put on it, I find the idea of slapping a "license" on a map file hilarious.

...I found ZTN to be very helpful and forthcoming with his map source files.
Okay, he did ask that the files weren't passed on to anyone else without his express permission but I guess that's just trying to keep some sort of quality control over rip off maps.
BTW, RPG: LOL.

Is that why perssp2.txt includes a little license at the bottom?
A license is useful because it lets someone who does want to respect your wishes know exactly what they are.
Not that I'd ever want to put my cock up your arse, but hey, it doesn't hurt to make that clear.

But maybe Fern wants it to hurt. Without a standard Open Arse license I can't tell either way.

I'd advise you to ignore everything you read in perssp2.txt as...
1) I was probably half-conscious at the time.
2) It was written 4 years ago when I was still pretending that people care about licenses.

Does that come with a reach around?

OK, so you keep your .map file to yourself. Great, you're safe now, brilliant, etc.
I'll just go decompile it, fix it up a little bit, change a couple of textures and release it as my own.
Point is, people can rip you off whatever you do. The license is (as Maj said) for your benefit when dealing with people who do respect others not those who are going to be bastards anyway.
You Don't Even Need A .map File

for textures, and probably entities, as one might notice when playing Carddm2b :D
I've already replaced all the textures at flecksp1 just to make it stop looking to buttugly.
