The map I built using a real life layout will be released in about three weeks. Just in case anyone wanted to know.

Maybe you'll be the exception. For just about any 'rule' you could make up about mapping someone will know a good map that breaks it.
Or...

the difference might lie in what the function of the building was for. The Borchardt library at La Trobe uni would make a crap level, but when Kell makes a 'library' it rocks. Consider the nightclub as real life inspiration: nooks, several levels (either joined directly or via a "cornered & staired" corridoor), variety of large atrium like spaces and smaller chill out areas (usually with more than one access/exit point, dead ends (toilets), a consistent theme and scheme with just enough variation in design to keep the patrons interested in their down moments.
Add some guns and it sounds like a DM level to me =)

the layout of my geocomp2 entry was completely copied from fbdm5 brutal force, but mirrored so ppl wouldnt recognise it (well noone did recognise it it think, mainly because only 5 ppl downloaded the map i think)... i tried to contact the author about it but got no reaction. well it was mainly because of the deadline that i needed a good layout fast that would work without playtesting. oh and i ripped the slopy concept from aardappel but he was okay with that :) what can i say... better to copy a good concept than thinking of a crappy one yourself
didnt know qmap still existed btw

As I am only a foreigner, having quiet a ball to understand what is ment, makes it difficult for me to even get into your way of thinking.
Reading these boards gives me a strange habbitude, which draws me from logical information to shall I say boredom.
It is not for me to decide what is wrong or right, as the answers are not coherent to me.
What I only want to say, if someone wants to get to straight point by asking who is stealing map- layouts, I just can't get it being randomized by opinions which are defended by irrational quotes.
You might say my temper is a little hazzardious, but maybe I just can't get used by
the agony a clear answer can minimize the reason of aking.
But go ahead, I will cheque my dictionary and see if there are better words to defend my offspring, still good friends anyway.
But may I know what you mean with QMD, so this Sancho can take it defends, and cut it up in a shorter way.

Just reading Gamespy's rather good 25 smartest gaming moments (a counterpoint to the recent, excellent 25 dumbest moments) and it reminded me of this thread:
The year is 1979, and first-year Computer Science student Roy Trubshaw... Then, while tinkering with the university's DEC SYSTEM 10, they discovered a powerful exploit: In effect, several users could access the same database. Suddenly it was possible for several players to play a game together... Eventually he had created a representation of the first house his parents had bought, with several rooms as well as a road and a garden outside. All in text, of course! Players could log into the game and move around from room to room by typing simple verbs...
How come everyone's first attempt at mapping is the house they live in, an environment clearly unsuitable for gaming purposes??
We'll never know!

That's because you live in a dank, grotty hole in the ground, and your meagre mapping skills don't extend to natural terrain.

The mine half is 80% of RCDM10.
The third map is a modified steal of the riverboat map from the Cryptic Passage addon for Blood, available through HOTU.

using RL (real life) arch as a basis for a map is not a bad idea. but like everything else "all things in moderation"
Rebuilding the quad at your school, or your house, or where you work might be good practice with the editor, but sucks as a complete proj. . .
BUT. . .
there are elements of each that might be cool. Maybe the sidewalk pattern in the quad is cool. maybe the way the deck overlooks the yard is cool. maybe the entry and foyer to your workplace is cool.
the trick is identifying those parts that can successfully make the translation from RL to GL (=
