!WARNING! Cynicism Alert !WARNING!
Never before in a multiplayer game have players had to worry about their shadow and whether or not it has revealed their position
Correct. In recent games, not having a shadow has been a moot point because you can hear their footsteps as they approach, but even then it is moot because a player can know exactly where the opponent is by hearing the him pick up ammo and items.
Never before in a multiplayer game have players [...] been able to shoot out lights so they can hide in the darkness.
*cough* Duke3D, Blood, Shadow Warrior *cough*
id software is so inventive!
Hiding in the shadows will increase camping, but if the movement speed in MP is a slow as it is in SP, then the whole game is going to be like camping anyway. You'll have to spawn the players with weapons or else they'll just go around with the default weapon because it will take 10 minutes just to move out of the current room. More emphasis will be placed on shooting accurately instead of dodging and strategy.

Hmm, this does sound like Willits is just sprinkling some 'multiplayer innovation' seasoning on the D3 anticpiation.
Sorry, but I like my multiplayer with speed, balanced weapon variation and rapid decision making. Slower and more tactical is cool with teamplay ( at least, if your team actually knows what it's doing and isn't comprised of a half-dozen gormless n00bs with a death wish ) but watching my shadow? hiding in the dark? if my expensive new card is churning flat out to render this oh-so-wonderful environment I would like to be able to see it :P
It might be fun, but hide and seek doesn't sound like such a new idea to me...
Wow

people are awefully cynical today :)
Actually, I agree. I want fast-moving players in fast-moving gameplay, like Quake or Soldat. The james bond Goldeneye 007 game on the N64 was fun and interesting, but so horridly slow!
Hmm

I dunno, D3 lighting combined with something like GeoMod would be cool and allow people to develop new strategies. If it worked well.
Hmm
people are too obssessed with DeathMatch these days.
ID should just worry about making the Doom 3 SP experience as good as they can, and not get distracted by DM.
If people want to build DM mods after its released [which they probably will anyway], that would work much better in my opinion.
In more general terms, I am tired of the constant marketing Hype surrounding Multiplayer/online gaming nowadays.
Lagging around maps being whined at by 14 years old who are all cheating anyway isnt my idea of fun. ;)
...
Actually that was going a bit far.
15 year olds are just as bad.
And
I do like Quake 3.

Whats up with the "Never before" crap? That sentence is just an outright lie. Ghost Recon makes you worry about your shadow and RPG pointed out games that already allow you to shoot out lights.
Ive always liked id just fine, but making false claims just really pisses me off.

The beginning of the quote was clipped 1 or 2 lines into the paragraph as it did start off with
"TW: Our focus hasn`t changed--we`re putting all our resources into developing an unbelievable single-player experience. We will, however, include a multiplayer component..."

care to expand?
I`m with most of you on this, I just thought to start a thread in order to see if anyone can actually provide an alternative argument that`s worthwhile.
For instance, while your points about AvP2, duke and other games having done the shoot to make room dark thing is correct, the lighting system in D3 could use it to much better effect.
And of course there`s false claims in there, like wrath said, it`s a PR exercise.
Hmm

a new breed of multiplayer? No.
But it will add yet another dynamic to the MP modes. Especially as with games atm its easy to spot a player in a map as their model is lit differently that then world and they stick out. In D3 if you still pretty still in a dark area then you are just gonna blend in with the environment.

Well of course it would be nice if it surprised with a really good dm experience but qw or any other favourite mp games will still be there... just give me t3h l33t engine (and a new comp)to play with and some evil demons to scare me.

yep, its pr talk. dont read it!
as UWF said, they should concentrate on SP (and they will). it`d be cool if someone non-id could improve the dm. i believe theres enough mappers and coders to make wonders AFTER the game hits the shelves. quake2 works fine by me. quake pace is faster which is better i know...quake 3 is a bit boring (BOOOM /me gets shot in the head)
really depends if in the menu you choose:
DM (camping mode): includes shootable lights and shadows and barbecue spot
or
DM (the real mccoy): fuck the lights, you wont have time to shoot em
lets hope the maps wont be too huge and player speed too slow. that would be real shit.

i could see running around in the dark being kinda fun if there were IR or night-vision goggle pickups... maybe with a limited battery? Might get old though.

I think that there`s too much credit given to "new" stuff. Just because something`s "new", the developers assume it`ll revolutionize gaming. I would hope they`d play-test it a little before going full-speed. Lots of games fail, and it`d be a shame...
In single player, however, hiding in the shadows is a good idea.
:P

I'd rather developers tried something new and failed over going with what they know works.
