The screenshots are... dark!
Practically Perfect
This was a blast. Seriously, I had a really good time with this level in a way I haven't had in quite a while.

First off, it felt like it belonged perfectly in that delightful twilight period of level design in early 97 when the craft was being honed by amateurs who had played through Quake exhaustively, but before they were influenced by what studios would do in the near future.

The inversion of progression, the selective arsenal and bestiary, and the use of symmetry to make things the right kind of nonsensical was very nice. I had a lot of fun in-fights that felt earned rather than the product of chaos or luck without trivializing an encounter.

Yes, those screenshots are dark, but screenshots never do a good level justice, and they wouldn't here either because the quality is in the flow on all axes, combined with the incredible sense of personality and flavor. This was a new place in Quake to be in. I hadn't been quite here before, but it fit in with the game world. Nice choice of music too.

It isn't flawless, the pacing of secrets feels off: an easy, early Red Armor secret versus a late unintuitive Green Armor secret, a Quad Damage after clearing a space, a Megahealth far removed from need, and a Pentagram way too late in the map. There are some technical hiccups but nothing egregious, just the sort of thing you could iron out.

But this is a great Quake map, it belongs with Quake and isn't simply in Quake in lieu of being somewhere else. This one is for the fans.

Really nice old-school atmosphere! The balance felt a little too easy, though, especially with Thunderbolt at the starting. 😄

Still, it was a lot of fun to play.

Thanks for taking the time to make and share another gem with us!
