RIP Tronyn
Very sad news to report that has been confirmed by his brother, known online as Whitefish. Also a message from his long time friend ryanscissorhands:

"I am very sad and sorry to announce that Tronyn, the Norse God of Mapping and Rants, has unexpectedly died this week. I have known him personally for 34 years, and his passion and talent were unmatched by anyone I’ve ever met. He has contributed so much to the Quake Mapping community for two and a half decades, and has blown so many minds with his level design, architecture, and project vision. He will be sorely missed.

May we feast and drink together again some day, basking in the glory of Valhalla.

RIP
It Has Been An Honor
To work with Tronyn these past several years. I hope to do his creations justice in completing what he gave me.

May his family find comfort in knowing that he has made an impact and will continue to.
A Great Loss For The Community
If there's any comfort, it's that his outstanding creations will keep delighting Quake players around the world for generations.

My heartfelt condolences go to his family and loved ones. May they find strength and consolation in these difficult times.

Awful news. My condolences.

I have no words for this.
Just feelings of sorrow.
If there was a LevelLord he sure was.
I will keep him as a very close friend.

This is incredibly sad news. Tronyn was always a huge part of the Quake mapping scene and I always enjoyed talking with him on here back in the day, when func was where it all happened.

I went back through some of our correspondence and found that my review of his Arcanum was the longest and most gushing review I'd ever written for any Quake content.

Quake isn't going to be the same without him.
A Tragedy...
Please let us know if there is any way that we can help out his family, for he has been a huge part of ours for many years.

R.I.P. Dustin/Tronyn
Sad News
When I first discovered custom Quake levels, probably late 2001, my main source of information was via TeamShambler. I found that most of the releases where good, but a single serving of Quake, even if quality, often paled in comparison to an episodic experience, where one could sink into something for hours at a time.
Few have been more prolific than Tronyn in this respect. Phantasmal Garrison and Coven of Ebony were two of my favorite Quake experiences from that era, and I reached out to Tronyn to let him know as much. He was gracious in his praise, and even offered to let me work on his upcoming project, Soul of Evil. It never panned out, due to me still being a novice, awful designer at that time, but even seeing the WIP of soe2m2 (Ogre Mines) opened my eyes, broadened my horizons on how to approach design.
He possessed an imagination that exceeded the box that Quake presented, no matter how large the box grew. For every new engine and upgrade that the original game saw, Tronyn had ideas that couldn’t be contained within the newest limits.
When I learned of his passing, I sought out information on him. We didn’t interact much during his lifetime, but it made me regret not reaching out more, knowing him better.
Apparently he was a professor at the University of Manitoba, where he taught both English and Icelandic literature. Furthermore, there’s many examples of his students singing his praises, of his passion for his subjects, of his willingness to engage and address questions in deep detail.
There’s probably more to say, and far more eloquently than I’m capable, but I think I’m done rambling. You were a trailblazer in the Quake community, and more importantly, touched many people’s lives in profound capacity through your teaching. You’ll be missed.
Here, Here
What a beautiful remembrance Ionous.
Heartwarming

Sad news, RIP.

I'm not much involved these days, but Tronyn is one of the Great Names I remember well from the old days, and his contributions will live on.
RIP
RIP Tronyn, I enjoyed his maps a lot. He was younger than me, it's so sad to hear this :(
What A Sad News
I have played many of his maps...speechless.
RIP Tronyn
What a sad news indeed. All my condolences to his family and friends. R.I.P.
:(
I enjoyed all his maps.
He was a pillar of the Quake community.
We will miss him a lot.
Something Wicked This Way Goes
Really sad news.

His contributions to Quake were a love-or-hate, but there's no denying he left a mark in the scene. Different and more extreme in size, shape and color, the maps and their gameplay were a display of imagination and creativity, beyond many conventions and technical restrictions - and, as it turns out, quite ahead of their time.
Truly a master in his own right and, judging from the few private discussions we had, a good guy, too.

RIP
RIP Tronyn
I'm so sorry to learn of this; he came across as a genuinely nice person. We had some very friendly back-and-forths some 20 years ago that were a very pleasant and rewarding experience. My condolences to his family and friends.

As an aside: when he was working on his Roman Wilderness of Pain series, he got mappers-block and allowed me to cobble together several of his map pieces into a spoof - A Roaming Wildebeest in Spain. I changed the name, the theme, the textures, the lighting, and crammed it full of rock terrain that I had been experimenting with. It ended up nothing like what Tronyn had intended but he didn't complain. Rather, he was very complimentary. And fortunately, he did eventually finish and release the Roman Wilderness.

Thanks for being Tronyn. Bon voyage...

Sorry... This should have been in my name: Mike Woodham

I can't say I knew Tronyn personally, but he always came across as a really insightful member of the community. Masque of the Red Death is one of my all-time favourite Quake maps not least because I'm a bit of a literature nerd myself; I only wish I'd known sooner just how far Tronyn's interest went! He'll be sorely missed in Quake circles and I'm sure far beyond. My condolences to his loved ones.
Devastating
I dont know what to say.
RIP to a legend.

Rest in Peace Tronyn. Your titanic contributions to Quake live on forever.
