I'd rather talk about the latest cool features of Adobe Creative Suite 2 with you than to fuss about intellectual property and contract law.
(I burnt out of that on my first serious job out of college as a paralegal for a firm whose only real client was a tobacco company).

...yes. A small but committed core group with a floating number of associates has been quietly working away on a new mission for Quake. Travail is a two episode, eleven level extravaganza that will probably celebrate birth around Quake's 10th anniversary.
Scragbait, Ionous (in one guise or another) and I have been pottering away for some time. Xen, [Kona] and even nightbringer were involved early on. When it bacame clear that the project wouldn't finish before [kona]'s exit from the scene, he released his proposed Travail level as Autumn Haunting. Necros has done the early work in developing the AI and attacks for a rather nasty episode boss. Kell is (I believe) working on some custom textures.
I hope to pop a bundle of screenies up at QExpo in a couple of days (to indicate the extent of our progress) in an effort to attract a model maker, animator and coder for the final push home.
Okay, I See You Point

and it is a bit different from the one I made on intellectual property; your saying that the assets you made out of whole cloth with those still belong to you, and that is true even if you
can't commercialy use them. That is true. I can't argue with that.
What I had in mind is the case of Fantasy Quake where there is this notice,
HOWEVER, ANY ALTERATION OF ANY PART OF THIS PROGRAM OR ITS
ACCOMPANYING MAP LEVELS MAY NOT BE DONE.
It is absurd for them to claim the majority of the assets they use are alterations of Quake models, textures and sounds. How can they claim a right for themselves which they deny ID?
Anyway, I could have been more clear earlier, sorry for the confusion, Lunaran.
Ugh,

there was some ugly cut and paste editing in my last post.
Glad to hear about the full sized project, Distrans.

I'm gonna steal all your maps and release them as my own and then ID will hire me and make me head designer for Quake 5 and I'll include your, oh excuse me; my maps in it.

cool beans.
I know there've been some single player-pushes now and then, but the last collaboration on the dm-side must've been ages ago.
Is the DM-scene dead? Cause by now, with broadband widely available, getting a custom map func_server up and running would be sooo much easier than a few years ago.
FEAR Demo Video

Here's a video I did of some little highlights/gameplay of the demo. While it doesn't really have huge spoilers, you might not want to watch it if you would rather experience it first:

I waited in line for a download slot like a good boy and when I finaly got the download it was a .wav file called 'harp', and IE immediately crashed: twice.
I dumped the file.
So, is FEAR any good?
No

and the download worked for me (eventually). The video Phait recorded doesn't make FEAR look too bad, although I understand everyone who's played it seems to agree they wish they hadn't.
One thing that looked good in that video was some of the movements of the generic evile troops. I liked it when one guy started scurrying away from Phait, shuffling on his front under a low obstacle in a vain attempt to save his life. There were some good moments where they jumped over stuff, too, but it looked scriped. Stuff that looked stupid included the bloody bullet-time. For gods sake, seriously.
Well...

Haven't passed the demo yet but my impressions so far...
Control was fine. I see some thought it was wanky, so I immediately recalled Riddick's drunken feel and hoped that wasn't the case, and for me - it wasn't.
AI retreat/dodge/dive/cover was good to see, definitely gave them a more human feel.
Spook-factor in the beginning and supportive ambience/music was nice to see.
Graphics - not sure what to say. I had to run it at DX8 shaders at 640x480 and settings generally on medium for all-around smooth play. Although when I first started the demo up, DX9 shaders were in use with reflections, etc etc. I'll just say it looks good for this generation of games, but graphics don't impress me anymore as most engines these days are starting to look alike.
I don't see what's so bad about the demo yet. I'm not real excited about the game, but I don't think it's so bad either.

Man, I came here specifically hoping you guys would manage to rival or even surpass the forums on Blue's and the Shack for hateful bitterness about the new Quake4 media but you're silent.
I don't know what to think anymore.

there's some Q4 multiplayer videos knocking around, doesn't show much gameplay, but you get an idea of the player movement and environments. Looks exactly like a graphically upgraded Quake 3 actually.

Thanks for posting the August video tho....as before, tech looks good - but the actual gameplay footage looks fantastic, really how a fantasy FPS should.
