 Hitman 1 Question

In this shot, rendered in wireframe:
http://www.phait-accompli.com/crap/hm/hm1_1.jpg
You'll see in the upper left and right corner a rectangle, with red squares in it. What is actually there in normal mode is text and HUD graphics.
Now, I don't know TOO much about graphics, but I am curious why the HUD elements seem to be one-in-the-same as everything else. I would think they would be a seperate layer of images and a font. From this shot I get the impression they are polys or somesuch. Make any sense? The crosshair is this way too.

Easier to just render two extra tris per character/image while you're at it, instead of after you've rendered the world, you get the screenbuffer and perform some weird 2d drawing on that.
 Actually That's Fairly Standard

Polygons will occupy the same screenspace regardless of resolution changes, whereas fonts change size. So the HUD is drawn on billboards for consistency.
Quake 3 does exactly the same thing.
 One AND The Same.

and yes, that's pretty standard. All 3D games that i am aware of draw text and HUD elements using the 3D API.
 Need An Upload
#7969 posted by erc on 2005/06/11 11:23:58
Allright, this time I'm sure that the file is nowhere to be found on the internet.
It's Juha Koiste's Dark Ages for the original Quake - as reviewed by Sefton on SPQ Level Heaven.
http://www.planetquake.com/spq2/quake1/d_f.htm
The filename is "darkages.zip" and it's 416kb's in size. If anybody out there has this map on his HDD - and I'm sure somebody has-, an upload will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for the help.

The file is very findable :)

Check out http://speeddemosarchive.com/quake/maps/ for several old maps... I know mwh or someone gave that link just days ago somewhere in here?
Anyways, enjoy!

What the FUCK is that? The only thing that looks good is the cyber demon IMO. The pinky? He turned it into a rat. That's pathetic. :(
I could have gone on happy without ever knowing that existed phait.
Central Processing - Nexuiz - Released
What started out as a simple foray into the DP engine resulted in a neat little 1v1 map. In addition to the overly generic name, it sports some pretty textures, pipes, and some glass in there too. You can grab your copy here:

it would be placed into the news, but it will not, because there are no screenshots provided.
 Not What I'm Looking For

Well, Mandel; thanks for your effort - though that's not what I'm looking for. At least, I'm not sure if that's the map or not, cause the filesize is smaller than the one of Sefton's site and the map does not have a file extension.
I tried the load the map after giving it an extension of .bsp - to no luck.
Any ideas?

It's a .zip file so you need WinZip or something similar to unpack it first. The .bsp file is inside the darkages.zip file.
I just downloaded it and played it today (old school, but it is December 1996 so don't expect too much)
 That's Not The Problem
#7976 posted by erc on 2005/06/12 03:33:10
Mike; I surely know about the .zip files and such - though the file inside the darkages.zip, "darkages", does not contain any extensions - just "darkages".
I renamed the file as "darkages.bsp" and tried to load it up, and this is is the error I got:
Mod_LoadBrushModel: maps/darkages.bsp has wrong version number (67324752 should be 29)
This is the first time I ever came across this error. Besides, Sefton's site says that the file is 416 kb's - this one is just 269. So?

I just downloade the file from the above location, and it contains 2 files, 'darkages.bsp' and 'Darkages.txt'. I tried the map, and it ran fine. Also it's size is 642KB.
So if you are saying you downloaded the file from the above site, I would suggest you download it again and give it another try.
 No Luck

Tried several times with IE5.0 and Opera 7.54 - to no luck. What kind of joke is this? VoreLord; is it possible for you to upload the file somewhere else, if it's Juha Koiste's?

is fine for me too, no problem. Must be an issue in your end.

that you can also always test the archive (CRC) to verify if it's corrupted, one good reason to always use archives even if they don't offer any compression.
 Thanks!
#7982 posted by erc on 2005/06/12 06:07:21
Not sure of it - made a CRC check and there were no errors.
Anyways, thanks Hrimfaxi for the upload! Got the map at last. By the way; both files are 269kb's though only the latter one works. Mysterious stuff, eh? :)
Sorry for all the fuss I made, thanks for all the replies I recieved.

Apologies if you answer this question on a daily basis, but is there a compelling reason your q1 compilers don't support hint brushes yet? And will they in the near future?

I've looked briefly into the only known Q1 tools that has added stuff like hint/detail and AFAIK it requires too many changes, e.g. a new map/prt file format and all tools must be synchronized for this. I don't feel comfortable with that so I've left it.
What I would like to do though is to reduce fullvis time, if possible. It has always felt like it's an ineffective algorithm. Since I still don't understand how it works I can't do that yet.
 Looking For Quake Files
#7988 posted by Spirit on 2005/06/13 03:45:14
Since I've got the chance to upload 2-3gb of Quake files to a friend's server, I'm searching for lots of stuff. I would like to use the space for singleplayer maps and mods (no conversions, but "mapmods" or mappacks like bastion, nehahra...). I don't want to upload plain BSPs or repacked ZIPs, so I need the original files :>
I'm sure some of you have archives like I do, would you run "dir /b / s> files.txt" in your archive folder and send me the files.txt or post it here? Then I could tell you which files I' missing.
