What Are Your Other Options :D
if you have a good pc , you can get it on PC (for ummm free *cough* )
Prince Of Persia
Ummm... I have it for the Xbox and whilst playing have thought quite often that the moves/controls on a PC would be a nightmare. That said, I am liking the experience quite a lot (about 5 hours in). It is very fun and atmospheric though a tad repetitious. Fun puzzles, nice fighting controls and a wonderfully/beautifully realized world.
Prince Of Persia
Whichever you like. PC has higher resolution if you've a decent graphics card, but the camera is slightly annoying. All the other controls are surprisingly well thought out.
Just Out Of Curiosity...
What modded quake exe does everyone use? Ive been using proquake, but I am looking pretty hard at fitzquake. Tomaz seems to have disappeared... and FUHquake is well... a little too different, same with the dark engine.

Im not really looking for a new look just some bug fixes and maybe better support for new hardware. Proquake is doing ok but there are some small problems with the HUD, and white lines around some textures. Also having trouble connecting to some servers. I thought with proq you could connect to anything...

Thanks FaT.
Well,
i personally really recommend Fitzquake. not only does it have lots of bug fixes as well as replacing botched effects like the stupid waterwarp, but there are some pretty awesome code optimizations in there. i've seen a fairly big decrease in render time just recently (around 56%), so FQ appears to be one of the fastest quake engines around. also, it keeps everything clean and original without any extra crap.
also, it features "overbright" lighting, which helps it emulate software lighting better so you don't get washed out looking lighting, and fullbright pixels (for glowing textures).

about the only thing i have against it is it still retains the original 600 edict limit so you still get packet overflows.

there's also tyr-quake (and tyr-glquake) which have a lot (if not all) limits removed (like the aformentioned edict limit).
panquake also has upped limits.

I use winquake... but then I'm on a 7+ year old PC. When I'm on a better machine I'll be using GLQuake.
Definitely Fitzquake
I hadn't tried it until recently but I tried FitzQuake about a week ago and I'm an immediate convert... its fast, stable, has lots of fixes and excellent enhancements (like the lighting, working r_drawflat, better noclip, etc etc).

And none of the annoying cheesy effects and other bollocks that people often add to these new engines.

Great work metlslime, much appreciated!
I Too!
Use metlslime exclusively for SP and testing maps! WTG metl you sex0r my world.
Metlslime = Fitzquake

I Despise...
...the lack of model interpolation personally. After being so used to GQ it looks horrid :-|
Raised Edict Limit And Model Interpolation
are the only things missing from, mind yout his is coming from only a playign perspective not a mapping one.

The new overbright lightmode is fantastic though and reason enought to try it.
I Use...
...GLQuake. And as a player, I struggle to find any reason to use anything else.
Shambler
higher edict limit is a valid reason, otherwise you cant play some maps without the game crashing (nesp_09 for example).

model interpolation is a preference, but I guess I'm just used to smoothed out anims rather than the default jerky ones.

same goes for overbright lighting, I prefer the emulated software look over the standard glquake lighting. But I dont use fitzquake because it's missing the above 2 things.
Prince Of Persia
I should've noted that I have a cool gamepad for the PC.

Anyway, I think I'll go with the PC version after I get an upgrade.
Thanks Everyone!
Looks like I'll be trying out fitzquake this weekend. I do plan on mapping a bit so I will also check out tyr-glquake.

I used IdGamma to adjust the color of normal glquake, and proquake. I have never seen quake look so good. If one of these can do the same internaly, that would be awesome.

One last unrelated thing... how does one make a dos batch file? Id be very gratefull if someone could point me to a tutorial on doing this for quake. Id like to be able to have one that will execute all my console variables. :)

Thanks! FaT.
Fatboy...
Tis really simple, just open notepad, type:

quake.exe +variable x replacing the filename & variables to the engine & vars of your choice, save as, when when choosing filetype select 'all files' and name the filename with a .bat extension. Then simply click to execute.
I Use:
you can also add %1 %2 %3 %4 %etc... at the end, so you can pass on other commands to the game like +map mapname or -game gamename
Thanks Xen & Necros!
I had no idea it was that simple. 0_O
Fitzquake R4wks
but I want to be able to alt-tab without b0rking it damnit... that's easily the biggest problem imo
Bear
it alt-tabs properly if it runs on the same res/bpp as your desktop. at least it works for me, i use 1280x1024/32 for desktop and for fq. it alt-tabs w/o problems here.
Fitzquake, Prince Of Persia...
Thanks for the kind words on fitzquake, guys. Model interpolation does seem to be the most popular missing feature in fitzquake, and i hope that i will be able to add it soon (maybe the next release, if there's time.)

Fatboy: regarding idgamma, fitzquake does have gamma support, but it does not look the same way idgamma does. Fitzquake's gamma uses the same gamma control that your video driver control panel uses, but the numbers are inverted to match the dos/winquake behavior (lower numbers are brighter than higher numbers.)

Prince of persia rocks; i've been playing it on xbox recently. The jumping puzzles are great, though i wish there was less fighting. (Fighting is fun for the first 4 or 5 guys in a battle, then gets tedious for me.) I need to get a good macintosh emulator so i can play the original as i remember it. (the silly DOS version's graphics just don't compare.)
Metlslime
If you include model interpolation, please make it optional.
Aguire:
i wouldn't have it any other way :)
Metlslime
we all wuv you, you know ^_^
Thanks For The Info Metslime.
I no offense but Ill still use idgamma to make the colors pretty. :D
