Although the Panthers are a very good team, they're going up against a defense that's very good at stopping the run. The Panthers entire gameplan is focused around the run. Should the Patriots shut down the Panthers running game, that would put the Panthers in a position where they would have to pass late the game, where the Patriot secondary can really hurt teams.
