Psst ... Quake isn't good at trees.

why not? surely the mdl format can handle a tree. Or you can make the trunk out of bsp using phong shading, and add branches as models.

Can we do alpha textures in .mdl yet?
If so, .mdl trees with alpha leafy bits should look decent enough?
.mdl tree + alpha leafy bits made from brushes could work just as well for now.
Could you not make trees from sprites?
Or even better, use the bsp model function in quoth or AD and it shouldn't have a super big impact on performance (as is my understanding)

would still look cool as a barren, rocky landscape with a few dead trees, kind of like

Trees kinda suck in Quake cuz you can't light them properly... I have a bunch of misc_model trees at that start of necrokeep in AD... they don't cast shadows, and are lit by whatever lightmap is underneath them so you can't even fake shadows without also turning the black.
But even if you took the models and converted them to brushes, you'd have the problem of trying to light all the faces well without any sort of bounce lights... something like phong shading would help blur the edges, but you're still likely going to end up with some odd black faces and will drive yourself mad just trying to light all your trees with pointlights!

Sprites kinda work. They aren't great though. Mdl based is limited...mdl + alpha brushes, sure could work. Pine trees could be done without alpha though...lighting can be faked with the skin for self shadowing.

I crashed things a lot and got frustrated quickly. But with a bit more time and patience I think it could work.

You're not allowed to finish that if it is to be your last project. Who do you think you are, Quentin Tarantino?
