Hrm, can't say I did, they looked normal to me. Perhaps an optical illusion because of the strange angle? Try doing some pm_thirdperson action to see if it's really different.
Headthump
Nowt to do with ray-tracing... in fact the output of Doom3 is the same as what you'd get with a basic ray-tracer.

What's needed is the bumps to be actual geometry, or an uber clever displacement pertubation parallax tachyon texture based thingymibob to fake it. I'm sure some clever sod will do a mod for it...
Good Phrasing

Jiggery-pokery is another useful phrase that I was introduced to recently.
Wow... Not Dark...
That screenshot seemed oddly bright...
Relief Mapping Is The Jiggery-pokery We Want

did the shadows cast by objects obscuring the torch light often look as if they were floating to anyone else?

Yes.

When the game was first released, I spent several long evenings chatting over the counter with a guy who worked in a local shop about it. We talked at length about the games pros and cons, and id stuff in general.
He commented on the light/shadows and cited an example that was almost verbatim what you describe re: railings.
It didn't seem to bother him though; maybe your more experienced eye caught it with less scrutiny.

Jiggery-pokery is another useful phrase that I was introduced to recently.

But I believe you need a custom engine for that.

Did I miss something, or did we all miss this?

I think a week or so ago he was saying he was very close to getting done, right after his current map.

It'll be sad to lose you Fatty! Good luck on future endevours!
I'm Not The Only One Against Bloom
Gamespot even had a whole category to which game had the worst use of bloom in 2004. Check it out.

Uuuuuuuuuuuhhhhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!
I got a new comp!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! yeaaaaahh!!! After years sitting at my poor p-133 I have finally got a faster duron-1000 PC.

I'm soooooo happy!!!

I'll tell you more soon.
Pulsar
congrats!
Bloom
Yeah, I just checked it out in the DarkPlaces beta, and it was a fun novelty at first, but after about ten minutes I just wanted to take Ranger's damn glasses off and give them a good clean...

Better than the old gl_glow effect though, which I guess it obsoletes now.
Fatty.
Yeah big up to Fatty, done a lot of good mapping in his time right from the old skool to recent days. Lots of project shit too.

Towne will always be a classic, w3rd.
Gotta Give Respect
to the fat man. If you gaze at the stars for long enough, and cross your eyes, on a clear night you can see him up in heaven, directing railway traffic for the rest of time, with a laptop running quake perched on his protruding belly.
Oh Well
The fact of the matter is, as I've stated, I have several endeavours I want to chase up this year, and also I am, truly and finally, bored with Quake... or most other FPSes for that matter.

That's why I'm dragging my heels with Arcane :P

Well, that and I've finally purchased a nice Radeon 9800SE card. Morrowind never ran so well...

Actually, that's something. Should I disable the on-motherboard video in BIOS?

PS: If anyone finds the Kiwi Summer, could they please return it. We're getting waterlogged down here!
Fatz
good luck living without quake! ;)

and yes, disable onboard video in bios, thus you'll save system resources like irq etc...
Hey, Fatty
PS: If anyone finds the Kiwi Summer, could they please return it. We're getting waterlogged down here!

It wound up here. It has been hovering around 70 degrees fahrenheit for the past two weeks. Everywhere you turn girls are wearing short-shorts and bikinni tops, and I have taken up drinking tequila sunrises. In the middle of January! I can barely stand it.

Good luck in all your endeavors you sexy bastard.
Fabloom
hmm yeah when I saw a friend play fable on his xbox I couldn't help wonder why they used lightbloom on EVERYTHING - they must really be in love with miss light bloom to use it the way they.
Fatty,
have you used the morrowind fps optimizer? with a fast enough video card, the program can push the view distance way beyond what morrowind normally allows. you can even push the fog back so far you can see to the edge of the cells that are loaded! ^_^ i don't know if there's a way to have more cells loaded at the same time though, so you can't see vivec city from the top of dagoth ur's mountain. :P
Hmmm
I'll have to try it again... last time I used it was with the onboard S3 crap. Fact is, I can already see further than ever.

Incidentally, State Highway One is down to one lane and two-hour delays for the second time in as many days. If the state of the capital city's main roads doesn't become an election football^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^Hissue, I'm a bowl of sentient, albeit rotting, fruit...
Who Is That Guy?
On the wall?

I'm sure I have seen him in aother map.
Megazoid
Its HP Lovecraft, I think?
