I just wanted to know if people had any links to good websites for either level design inspiration (photos, paintings, concept art, etc.) or just for architectural reference. We had a thread like this on the old qmap, but we know how much good that does us. |

Professor Indellkoffer, speaking at a dinner of the California Astronomical Society, expressed the opinion that the explosions on Mars are undoubtedly nothing more than severe volcanic disturbances on the surface of the planet.

"Nothing More Than Severe Volcanic Disturbances"

Severe volcanism on tectonically inactive Mars of a strength that could send plumes of smoke into space, is hardly worthy of a 'nothing more than.'
At twenty minutes before eight, central time, Professor Farrell of the Mount Jennings Observatory, Chicago, Illinois, reports observing several explosions of incandescent gas, occurring at regular intervals on the planet Mars. The spectroscope indicates the gas to be hydrogen and moving towards the earth with enormous velocity. Professor Pierson of the Observatory at Princeton confirms Farrell's observation, and describes the phenomenon as (quote) like a jet of blue flame shot from a gun (unquote).

Hahaha ... but no. Jam2 was ikwhite and ikblue themed, which are Hindu texture sets mostly, but no one went for that style, neither most of the pics posted for inspiration back then were. So, first, that jam was mostly Arab kind of Muslim architecture. Second, it doesn't have to be the same, the theme could be the architecture, but being done in whichever texture set the mapper wants, like knave textures for example, or done in another textures that fits closer to that architecture, like Hexen2, Heretic2, Daikatana, or even UT ones. Both options would lead to a very different jam, in my opinion.
Third, even if the theme were the same if it is interesting enough, why not repeat it? And those buildings are impressive enough to inspire.
Fourth, i wrote too much considering the lesser importance of this topic. Because, well, the probability of this jam happening is almost zero.

Lots of inspiring images, not sure why they're in a Q2 thread though :P
Reasons?
First: why not? :D
Second: being Quake 2 doesn't mean they can't do some medieval themed maps, in fact there were some of them in the previous contests, and at least one mapper is doing one with for this contest.
Third: it can serve as direct inspiration for a base castle.
Forth: it can serve as inspiration for lighting or layout, not only for theme and brushwork.
Fifth: yes, i'm bored
By the way, are you planning on sending a second map for the contest? Do you believe you'll have the time?

"make it like a particular style of medieval architecture popular in country X during the century Y - no, stop, your arches are all wrong!"
Is a bad idea for a map jam.
Actually

apart from the last 2 pics, the remaining ones are all examles of persian architecture since the buildings were built by the moghuls.
So lun wins :)
Good One, Nitin

But Arab (theme used mainly in the maps in jam 2) isn't Persian. Saying that would be like saying English are the same as Italians. :P
Nah, a bit of trolling from my part aside, truth is that no one can win that one, ... if someone would ever want to ... : an architectural style in a given time is the mix of several styles taken from all the cultures a culture had contact with over centuries, and isn't either something concrete that applies to most buildings built in the same area at the same time by the same culture. Even on religious buildings, where the architect knows that his neck will be hanging out in the gallows if he isn't close enough to it, that didn't usually happened.
make it like a particular style of architecture
Errr ... Kinn ..., you are defining jams 1 and 2 to a big extent, jam4 to a lesser extent (is about gravity too), and ''retro''jams (Zerstorer is more about ambient than architectural style, in my opinion). But i'm not talking in this case about defining them for their rules, but the maps submitted themselves, the rules didn't enforced the style that was on the maps.
An exception to that ... maybe sm175, but that's probably because was half speedmap pack.
Autoquote: not for their their rules, but the maps submitted
Now that i think about it, its something that happens a lot, like what some teachers i had in college said: show the students an example of what they can do for the subject's work, and at the next class they'll bring works cloned from it.
He was right, that happened with most of them in every generation, and the rest were clones of previous generations' works, which is the same.
Because of that issue, this thing i said before (Autoquote:Third, even if the theme were the same if it is interesting enough, why not repeat it?) is a very bad idea.
