I thought a trio of themed threads about other entertainment media might be good. If you're not interested, please just ignore the thread and pick some threads that interest you from here: http://celephais.net/board/view_all_threads.php

Anyway, discuss films...

Never heard of it for some reason.

I think it's big shit in anime circles. Of course, the mistake anime fans make, is thinking anyone normal knows or cares about anime.
What's Anime?

A Cartoon Made In Japan

Fucking Hell People
Ghost in the Shell is a staple of Cyberpunk fiction, definitely one of the most famous Cyberpunk works out there. Are you living in a cave? It's as important as Akira or The Matrix for Cyberpunk cinema, if not more (The Matrix uses a lot of concepts from Ghost in the Shell too). I also confirm what Killes said regarding influence, Ghost in the Shell influenced a whole lot of Cyberpunk stuff, from video games to films, etc. Deus Ex for instance lifted a lot of things from Ghost in the Shell. Now I don't like the original manga much (never been a fan of Shirow to be honest) but Oshii's films and the first Stand Alone Complex season are god-tier.

That film looks like complete trash by the way, and there was no fucking way they could've had Oshii's version's story for your regular Hollywood audience. It's far too complicated and requires a bit of thinking from the audience.

Anime
Ah, that explains my lack of awareness. I don't think I've read a comic book since sometime in the 80s. Nothing wrong with them, of course.

These people...shit on "cartoons" but play fucking videah games LOL!
Fucking ridic, just bad "oh anime, japanese weirdos, furries and weird gay romance shit amiright guys? ..."
Cyberpunk Is Gaaaaaay HTH.

Sorry......
......I get the vague impression I should be taking this REALLY SERIOUSLY especially as #func's veteran of original-in-any-series militant purism Skacky has got involved.

So if someone can show an example slightly more convincing than getting blood boilingly outraged that the 2017 GITS has a 50 second fight scene with the character's face shown at 37 seconds and the 1997 has a slower paced 68 second fight scene with the character's face shown at 67 seconds (this is the crucial difference that is ruining the entire film, right??), then I will ponder long and deep about the moral implications of it. Cheers.
Oh Wait A Minute. My Mistake.
It's not that there's an 18 second difference in the fight scene more a 30 second in difference in the face reveal....

it is clearly to add more face time for dear lead actress, its not like they would have trouble recreating the head gear pictured in the anime, the problem with it is obstructs expensive-ticket-selling-face or whatever.

It's that when the face is revealled from the cloaking, the original GITS character takes 3 seconds to lift up the eye mask head gear thingy.

That's it, those 3 seconds. I get it now.

Don't forget Shambler is the guy who refuses to play old games and thinks shitty reboots and awful sequels are just fine.
Shitty Reboots And Awful Sequels Of Said Games

Yeah,
I'd refuse to watch the original GITS and watch the 2017 remake specifically to relish in the slickness of leaving out THOSE 3 SECONDS OF EYE MASK CRUCIALITY and annoy you dicks. Except apparently - and I can't remember this - the GF says I watched GITS at her flat a while ago. I dunno if it was the series? Or the original film? Suffice to say it must have left a huge, culture-defining impression on me.

Yeah so a culture-defining work has no influence at all if you don't like it or if it doesn't leave a lasting impression on you.
No That's Misquoting Me....
.....what I'm actually saying is,

YOUR MOM. Srsly. Nuff said.
Fuck Anime
HTH.

I'm still deciding whether I should watch the original first, or the live action first. Being that I've seen neither. I have been saving the original up for years so maybe it's time. I'll see how the reviews go.

I don't get what the big deal with those 2 scenes is though, they looked pretty identical to me. Or is the cartoon not the main chick? The person under the mask does look like a dude, but then anime artists have problems drawing men that are supposed to be attractive. They just end up looking like pretty ladies.

What annoys me is Scarlett Johansonson being cast. I'm over looking at her pulling ducklips with her giant prolapsed asshole lips in every movie she's in lately. She has little range in her acting.
Agreed With Kona
Dont give a shit about anime, but those 2 scenes looked pretty comparable. Scarlett Johansson is beyond shit in action films though, and I can understand the annoyance around making asian characters white, it's somewhere between racist and incredibly lame.

The problem with her is that she's clearly really fucking unathletic and ungraceful. Kind of a big deal when the fight scenes are the majority of a film. And you have to watch her throw some awful punch or kick and then you get this stupid fucking smug pout for dessert. I dunno, maybe hire someone who has martial arts training? Or at least played sports growing up? Maybe there's someone like that in Japan if we look hard enough.
FYI Ghost In The Shell And Akira Are Not Your Regular Anime
There's more to anime than cringey teenager crap or cute little girls with pink hair and big eyes.
Guysh.
I translated killes gobble-de-gook for you. The scenes are radically different (apart from the trivial 22 years and cartoon vs. live action minor issues) because of that 3 second delay in the cartoon one where he/she/it lifts the eyemask. And thus the whole film and the entirity of cyberpunk culture is ruined FOREVER.
AKIRA
Is phenomenal visually and technically. It may be a little too obtuse for its own good. Or maybe I'm just dense. Or both.

I've intended to watch Grave of the Fireflies for the last few years but can't seem to bring myself to commit two hours to a movie :/
Akira Is Awesome
GITS is decent (have never liked it as much as its reputation but it has some nice ideas and some killer visuals and soundtrack).

The problem with the new remake is not Scarlett Johannson, it's Rupert Sanders as director. The trailer shows the same blandness and unimaginative direction of Snow White and the Huntsman.

Ok ok let me clear up the scene thing for you Shambler as your powers of observation do seem a tad lacking :

First - you see Johanbitches face at 19 seconds of the scene which is as soon as she enters the scene :
https://youtu.be/N9rsosPkQqA?t=19

its the flickeringcamo - you recognise her mug clearly - this is the "oh no the audience is so dumb they might not understand whats happening and get frustrated and vomit their popcorn in rage if they have to wait 40 seconds to understand" moment. + more Jocunt face-time bonus.

Second is not about shortening the scene for gods sake - its the TECH - the camo tech is a TEXTILE which turns the wearer transaprent, ergo you need some of this textile over your FACE for it to work...just like the bodysuit suit she is wearing...in the live action the tech works what ? how ?
It magically spreads its invisi-semen over Jobitches face somehow ? Then there should at least be a shiny scheen of invisigoop all over her face to be wiped off.

No - the answer is they threw out any logic or care for the world building of GITS in favor of jobitch face time, because you know, they are banking on this "talent" investment hard and also they seem pathetically untalented/dumb/lazy in finding ways of allying their interests with the ones of GITS.

The worst of it is the character is recognizable enough in the anime in a subtle but perfectly decent way too for anyone *paying attention* : the outline of the haircut in the light refraction of the camo.

The timing issue is a bollocks excuse shambler, they can def accelerate the textile pulling back, its not to save time, they did plenty of that already by removing the bad dudes attempt at defending himself with the knife.

And no nothing against Scarlett Johannson per se , direction, production etc are the big problem as nitin says- replace with any actress I dont care, asian or african or whatever - I am of the opinion some liberty can eb taken with this - the important part if to portray the alien-ness of the Majors body - that attempted sexyness which kinda fils due to the bodies weaponized nature - its slightly off-putting outlandish moves etc, you see moments where the joints and skin stretch out really weirdly etc. Its a whole central theme of GITS - the Majors relation with her synthetic body - something the movie seems to pretty much blow off so far wth Jo-looser's performance there.

She is not the problem other than she is definately not throwing her wait as an actor of higher caliber and integrity would in insisting on being true to the character they are portraying. (Heath Ledger(rip), Caprio are examples amongst others of actors who seem to give a fuck, whatever their motive is for this)
Hmm
The scene is taken out of context so it's kind of hard to judge, but the fact that the guy doesn't fight back in the new version is weird, it just looks like she's beating him up more than she has to, whereas in the original he obviously has augs and is a threat.

Anyways, Oshii vs Sanders, no need to say any more.
Killes.
I stopped at your 3rd paragraph, did any of the rest of it make sense??
